A good chunk of Encinitas walks its dog down Coast Highway 101 in the afternoon, and a good chunk of those walks end at a patio table. Ours is one of them. This guide is written by the people who work the floor here, so it's less "top ten patios" and more what actually happens when you show up at 641 S Coast Hwy 101 with a leash in one hand.
Who this patio suits
Our patio is open-air, partly shaded, and set back from the sidewalk, which matters more than people expect. Dogs that get wound up by passing skateboards do better at the tables along the inside edge; dogs that want to watch the whole street do better near the rail. We've got room between tables, so a mid-size or large dog can lie down without becoming a trip hazard for servers carrying trays.
It works well for a couple splitting a starter after a Moonlight Beach walk, for a group of four watching a game with a dog under the table, and for the solo regular who reads with a pint. It works less well for a puppy in the middle of leash training on a packed Saturday night. That's not a rule, just honest advice.
The unwritten patio rules
Keep your dog leashed and on the ground next to your chair rather than on the furniture. Dogs stay on the patio — health code keeps them out of the indoor dining room, service animals excepted. If your dog is uncomfortable, we'd rather you move tables than tough it out; ask a server and we'll find you a quieter corner if one exists. And if there's a mishap, just flag us down. It happens weekly and nobody is upset about it.
Water shows up if you ask, usually before you finish asking. We keep bowls behind the bar. On hot afternoons we'll refill without being asked, because the flagstone gets warm and dogs drink more than their owners think.
What to order with a dog in tow
Order things you can eat one-handed. The Cheeseburger 101 — lettuce, tomato, onion, cheddar, secret sauce — is the default for a reason, and it comes with fries or a side salad. If you're sharing, the short rib nachos hold up on the patio better than anything else on the starter list, and the roasted buffalo cauliflower and shishito peppers both travel well from kitchen to a table in the sun.
To drink, our house Biergarden Lager is the low-effort answer and it's $7 all day, every day, alongside the house IPA. Beyond that, we keep 20-plus handles rotating, so ask the bar what just went on. If you're heading back out for a longer walk afterward, an iced tea or a zero-proof pour is a perfectly normal order here.
Your dog can eat too. Our Dog Bites list is short on purpose: a plain burger patty, grilled salmon, a scrambled egg, or bacon bites — no seasoning, no sauces. It's the closest thing we have to a kids menu for the four-legged crowd, and it buys you an extra twenty quiet minutes at the table.
Timing, parking and the walk in
We open at 11am Monday through Friday and 10am on weekends, and we run until midnight every night. The kitchen goes until 10pm, 11pm on Friday and Saturday. Weekday mid-afternoon is the sweet spot for a dog: shade has moved onto the patio, happy hour hasn't filled the tables yet, and the street noise is low.
Parking is street parking along 101 and the side streets a block up. Most people with dogs park a few blocks away on purpose and use the walk in. We're two blocks from the Pacific, between Moonlight Beach and Swami's, so a beach loop and a burger is a genuinely easy afternoon — sand, rinse, patio, home.
If you'd rather not deal with a leash at all, order pickup on Toast and eat at the beach. We'd still rather have you here, dog and all.
