Moonlight Beach mornings have a rhythm. Somebody surfs, somebody watches from the sand, everyone gets hungry around the same time, and then a group of damp people wanders up the hill looking for coffee and something hot. We're two blocks from that, on Coast Highway 101, and we open at 10am on Saturday and Sunday specifically for that group.
Getting here from the sand
From the Moonlight Beach lot it's a short uphill walk to 101, then south to 641 S Coast Hwy 101. Call it five or six minutes at a beach-towel pace. The lot itself fills up early on weekends, so if you're driving straight to brunch it's usually faster to park on a side street inland and walk down. Coming from Swami's, you're heading north along the same highway, past the surf shops, and we're on your right.
No dress code. Sandy flip-flops, a wetsuit hanging out of a tote bag, a stroller, a leashed dog — all of that is a normal Saturday for us. The patio is open-air and set back from the sidewalk, so it stays comfortable when the marine layer burns off around eleven.
Mimosa flights and Bloody Marys
The two brunch drinks people come for are the mimosa flight and the Bloody Mary. The flight is the table order: rotating juices poured alongside sparkling wine so everyone builds their own and argues about which one won. Order it for four people and it becomes the centerpiece of the meal whether you planned that or not.
Our Bloody Mary is the other direction — house mix, properly seasoned, with a garnish that counts as a first course. It's the correct order after a cold session in the water. If you want something between the two, a michelada with our house Biergarden Lager splits the difference and drinks lighter than either.
Coffee is always on, and if you'd rather skip alcohol entirely, the bar keeps zero-proof options and sodas. Nobody blinks at a table where half the group is drinking cold brew.
What to eat
Brunch here leans savory. The breakfast burrito and the chilaquiles are the two plates that leave the kitchen most often, and both hold up if you linger. If you want the crossover order, get a burger with a fried egg on it — the Cheeseburger 101 with an egg is the unofficial post-surf special, and it comes with fries or a side salad.
For the table, the Bier Pretzels with bier cheese are the easy shared start, and the roasted buffalo cauliflower works better at 11am than it has any right to. Kids do fine here: quesadillas, tenders, mac and cheese, and a patio where nobody minds noise.
If you have an allergy or a dietary need, just ask your server. The kitchen will walk you through what can be modified — gluten-free buns are available, and several plates can go vegetarian.
How to time it
Ten to eleven is calm and the sun hasn't fully cleared the patio yet. Eleven to one is peak — expect a wait on a sunny Sunday, though it moves faster than it looks because the patio turns over quickly. After one, the room shifts toward the afternoon crowd and the taps take over from the coffee.
Weekdays we open at 11am and run a lunch and dinner menu instead, with happy hour from 3 to 6pm — worth knowing if your beach day is a Tuesday. Either way, we're pouring until midnight and the kitchen runs until 10pm, 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
